Working to play
Musicians toil at day jobs to finance a passion

John Moore
Denver Post Staff Writer
Sunday, August 05, 2001 - There are odd jobs, and then there are jobs that
are odd. Musicians tend to take on those that are both.
The government official
By day Jim Mercado is Housing Programs Manager for the city of Denver. "I am
in charge of the city's affordable housing programs, federal housing funds and
developing housing stock for everyone from homeless families to workforce
housing," he said. "This is a major priority of the current administration, and
my position is both high profile and at times controversial."
By night, Mercado is the bassist for the classic rock band Hat Trick (named
after an incongruous love for both the Colorado Avalanche and the archrival
Detroit Red Wings). The band opens for The Iguanas Aug. 18 at the Bluebird."
A new CD called "Acrobat" includes a guest appearance by bass player Andrew
Hudson, much better known around town as the spokesperson for Denver Mayor
Wellington Webb.
